16. Candi Sukuh, fifteenth century. Located at the eastern edge of Central Java, 27 miles east of Surakarta (also known as Solo), built during the peak of Majapahit’s power. Its unique style has been described as a radical departure in Javanese architecture. Although any actual connection between them is exceedingly unlikely, it often reminds observers of much older temples in Mexico and Guatemala, due to its steep pyramidal design and central staircases leading directly to the top. One might also note the turtles that appear to form the foundation for the temple and for the statuary in front of it. The focus of some of its sculpture upon themes of procreation is also unusual (although not unique) in Indonesia. (Courtesy, Brady Hughes.)
